Ugandan Government to block VPN after social media users avoid paying tax
Social Media users in Uganda where mandated to pay tax as from yesterday before the use of platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Tinder and other social media platforms, but the recent news is that the government has ordered local ISPs to begin blocking VPNs.
Instead of paying these Social Media tax, users are now flooding VPNs to avoid this new assault on their pockets. As a result of this move, VPN use has escalated in such a short period. Now, the Ugandan Government want to block VPN so that people can’t evade the social media tax.
Issuing a statement, Uganda Communications Commission Executive Director, Godfrey Mutabazi said that Internet service providers would be ordered to block VPNs to prevent citizens from avoiding the social media tax.

Inline with that, ISP’s in the country like MTN, Airtel, and Africell has already informed their customers that the services listed above would be blocked until payment is made. An added incentive is when users pay a month up front, they get a little discount. The payments are made using their mobile phones.
You will recall that in our earlier post, we mentioned that the Nigerian Government’s plan to regulates the use of Social Media. The Nigerian senates have already passed the bill for second reading. The government might even go as far as taxing other online activities.
