Huawei overtakes Apple to become the No. 2 smartphone seller globally
Chinese phone maker Huawei is now the world’s second largest smartphone vendor, according to market research released Tuesday. Huawei achieved this by overtaking Apple who previously held that position.
The market researcher was done by Canalys and it shows that Huawei shipped 54 million handsets in the quarter, an increase of 41 percent over last year. According to the research, the achievement can be attributed to the P20 handset and its Honor sub-brand.
The top spot was retained by Samsung who shipped 73 million units, still lower than last years record. Apple presently seats on the third spot with 41 million units with a 1 percent growth rate.
Speaking on Huawei’s performance, Canalys analyst Mo Jia said,
“Huawei’s strategy has evolved significantly over the last six months, Despite its failure to strike a US carrier partnership earlier this year, the company has turned around quickly, moving away from its drive for profitability and focusing instead on finding volume growth at the low end.”
Despite recording this impressive milestone, it’s not been an easy year for Huawei, as they had issues with security agents like the heads of the CIA, the FBI, and the National Security Agency. Americans were advised by this agents not to purchase or use Huawei products and services out of concerns they’re used to spy.
