VP Osinbajo receives Nigerian teenagers who won World tech innovation challenge
The Save-A-Soul team won the 2018 Technovation world pitch junior division in San Francisco (World largest technology competition in California, the United States,), were warmly received by Vice President Yemi Osinbanjo in Abuja yesterday.
The six teenage girls include Promise Nnalue, Jessica Osita, Nwabuaku Ossai, Adaeze Onuigbo, Vivian Okoye. During the competition, the built a mobile application called ‘FD Detector’ to tackle the problem of fake pharmaceutical products in the country.
Technovation is a program that invites girls to identify a problem in their communities and then challenge them to solve them by developing apps.
The competition also consisted of 2,000 mobile app developers in Africa, out of which the girls were selected to represent Africa in the World stage. They all attend Regina Pacies Secondary School in Onitsha, Nigeria. To become the first Nigerian team to win the competition, they had to defeat teams from the United States, Spain, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and China.

These young ladies in Junior Secondary School, developed a mobile application called ‘FD Detector’ to tackle the problems of fake pharmaceutical products in Nigeria.

Speaking about her plans for the future, one of the girls Jessica said,
“I need help to further my education and to make our App a reality. Any organisation (government, pharmaceutical companies, NAFDAC or World Health Organisation) is most welcome.”
Concerning the reason behind their choice of App, the team mentioned that has the largest market for fake drugs, and they plan to partner with the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), using the app, to tackle this challenge. They will also be pitching the App to investors in Silicon Valley.
