6G is coming! SK Telecom team-up with Nokia and Ericsson in 6G research
According to a new report, South Korean mobile operator SK Telecom has announced that they have enter agreement with telecom equipment vendors Nokia and Ericsson to conduct research and development for 6G wireless networks.
The three company would be making research on Ultra Reliable and Low Latency (URLLC), Distributed Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO), artificial intelligence (AI) on networks, 28GHz band and 5G Stand-Alone (SA) networks to apply on commercial networks.
“Collaboration between companies like this will be important as the technology and standard for 6G networks is yet to be clearly defined,” the South Korean company said
Further, SK Telecom is looking to explore 6G requirements and develop a new business model for the implementation of the next-gen network and they are also working with Nokia and Ericsson to improve its 5G networks, which was rolled out in April.
Just last week, it was reported that 5G subscribers in South Korea have reached 1 million subscribers within just 69 days. SK Telecom holds 40% of all 5G subscriptions while Korea Telecom and LG Uplus each account for 30%. SK Telecom and KT saw more customers upgrade from 4G to 5G while LG Uplus users grew the most with an estimated 21% rise in the past month.
